Welcome back to the Art Medley! This is where I give you periodic updates on my work outside of RENDERED: I am a freelance artist and writer, and in-between creating essays and larger artworks, I take part in many other creative activities. The Art Medley is a glimpse into my larger world, my accomplishments, my sketchbooks, and whatever is going on in my art studio at the moment. This month, I have a lot to share. Enjoy!
PUBLICATION: Eaten Magazine
My first commissioned article, “Soybeans and Anarchy: The Leguminous Futures of Li Shizeng” is OUT NOW in Eaten Magazine Issue n°22, “Tech.” I wrote about Belle Epoque Paris and a Chinese-born scientist (and anarchist) who researched soybeans and all their political implications. This scientist was briefly mentioned in Alicia Kennedy’s book “No Meat Required,” and it piqued my interest, so I decided to research it myself. I spent the month of November 2024 in research and writing mode, and voilà, the fruits of my labor are now in print. Available internationally in bookshops and online!
Christmas Market 2024
I did a Christmas market in December… and I sold exactly one postcard. I’m learning that not every opportunity will connect me with a public who digs my work… and that’s okay! 2024 was a shit year for artists and artisans across all genres. I was happy with my booth, and created new pieces for sale (see below), but they just didn’t land. I did meet some cool artists, and ended up having a good day. But that said, I’ll be looking for future events that attract a different clientele that may be more receptive to my work.

La Lotería Gastronómica: A collaboration with Viva La Vida Food Lab

Angelica of Viva La Vida Food Lab commissioned me to create a linoprint series for the launch of her Mexican food truck business: based in the greater area of Angers, France. Comida mexicana with a local emphasis, it was so fun to create these images! Inspired by the Mexican game la lotería, I created a series of 8 images: linoprints, stickers, and digital images for Angelica to use in various print projects during the year to come. If you are in the Pays de la Loire region of France and have a craving for some comida mexicana sabrosa, check them out on-site, or hire them to cater an event!
On 2024, On 2025
I spent a lot of 2024 applying for opportunities, and fielding mostly rejections. My writing schedule slowed down, and I tried to balance social media updates with reaching out locally in French to various opportunities. I’m still very much trying to find my place here, and 2024 was here to test my resilience. I’ve decided I don’t think I’m ready for an art show yet, but I am interested in:
seeing more of my work in print: illustrating for magazines, cookbooks, zines…
participating in a live event or two every year;
working with clients in food/bev who need art;
finding an artistic community with whom I can collaborate.
Now that I’ve put it out there in the ether, let’s see what 2025 has in store for me! I can already tease that there will be an upcoming illustration of mine in print… more on that later this year!
I’ll be back on April 1 with the next installment of RENDERED. Until then, be good to yourselves. Bye for now.
I love your industrious spirit. Take advantage of all opportunities! You are successful and talented! Keep going!😘😘😘💛💛💛
